Wellhausen, Julius

Wellhausen, Julius
   Biblical Scholar.
Wellhausen was born in Hamelin, Germany, and was educated in Göttingen. Subsequently he taught in Halle, Marburg and Göttingen. He is primarily remembered for his Prolegomena zur Geschichte Israels in which he outlined the theory that the Pentateuch, rather than being written by Moses, was the product of several earlier sources. This is generally known as the graf– Wellhausen hypothesis and it completely transformed Old Testament scholarship. Wellhausen himself has been described as the Darwin of biblical studies.
